Stay on the lookout for Alexa's upcoming appearances in the Northwest, alexajarvis.com. CONGRATULATIONS to Carlos Garcia, the 2014 WAC Team Member of the Year! Carlos was honored at the Team Member Awards Banquet in February. You've probably seen Carlos hard at work in the 8th Floor Sports Café, which he opens five days a week. In nearly 19 years, Carlos has never opened the café late. Perhaps more impressive, he knows most regulars by name. "He makes everyone feel special," Sports Café Manager Anne-Marie Mennen says. ank you, Carlos! Our very own aria Team Member of the Year WAC PERSONAL TRAINER JAIME CROW shows the Renegade Row, a great exercise for the core, especially the abdominal muscles. 1. Place a hand-weight on the floor. Get into straight-arm plank position, body straight. Widen your feet as needed for extra support. Grab the weight with one hand. 2. Retracting your shoulder blade and keeping your elbow in, pull the weight up to your side. Lower the weight to the floor. Complete three to five sets of 10–15 repetitions on each side. EXERCISE OF THE MONTH Happy birthday, Earth Day! WAC MEMBER DENIS HAYES organized the first ever Earth Day 45 years ago. This April, we invite you to take a moment to honor our planet and those who work to protect it. Here are some ideas: 1. National Park Week opening weekend: April 18–19 Enjoy free entrance at all sites in the National Park system, including Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks. 2. Earth Day: April 22 Learn more about the movement and how you can get involved at earthday.org. 3. Skagit Valley Tulip Festival: April 1–30 Enjoy a trip to this annual carnival of color, tulipfestival.org. 4. Bus it to the WAC: At your leisure Skip the drive and find out how you can bus to your favorite club. Metro's trip planner makes it easy, metro.kingcounty.gov. 5. Bullitt Center: By appointment Visit the greenest commercial building in the world, located one mile from the WAC at the corner of 15th Avenue and East Madison Street on Capitol Hill, developed by Denis Hayes. Resurrecting the rivalry WE'VE BEEN challenged! e Multnomah Athletic Club has invited the WAC to an interclub decathlon, to be held in Portland on May 16–17. Teams will consist of eight members from each club— preferably one male and one female in each of the following age groups: 18–24, 25–39, 40–54, and 55 and up. Events will include bench press, jump rope, pull-ups, 2,000-meter row, 6.5-mile bike, 50-meter swim, shot put, 100- meter dash, 400-meter dash, and 1-mile run. e WAC–MAC rivalry dates to the 1930s.
