HEN THE WASHINGTON ATHLETIC CLUB opened its doors in
December 1930, the oddsmakers of the day considered the Club a long shot
with little hope of survival. It wasn't because social clubs weren't popular
across the country. Rather, the Depression was descending upon the Pacific Northwest.

short months some 500 members withdrew due to the strain on their finances.
