You've summited some of the classics—Everest, Denali, Aconcagua. When did you start climbing? i joined a mountaineering group after college and soon enough i was climbing abroad in the andes, the alps, and in central asia. one peak led to the next. Why Mont Blanc now? this is my 2013 new year's resolution. My husband and i didn't make it the first time in 1998 due to dangerous conditions. after all these years, i'm determined to try again—hopefully with the benefit of long summer days in july and favorable conditions on the route. What's your training routine and how are you preparing for Mont Blanc? i do a lot of aerobic training and add weights a few times a week. More than ever, i focus on core strengthening through pilates. i also do as many hikes as possible. My husband and i climb Mount rainier annually, and i recently completed the Mercer island and Whidbey island half marathons. Do you have a favorite mountain? Mount Mckinley. i summited on july 4, 1985. closer to home, Mount rainier is one of my personal faves. it reminds me why i love the northwest. What keeps you motivated? i like the mental and physical challenges of mountaineering, and never forget the motto of renowned northwest mountaineer ed Viesturs: "Getting to the summit is optional— getting down is mandatory." that's what i'll be telling myself while on Mont blanc. 54 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2013 Ease joint and muscle pain.
