Our moral compass has told us that it is our obligation to help ensure our future is brighter than our past. Currently, our club supports the area through community partnerships in which financial and human capital are provided to organizations such as Special Olympics Washington, Seafair, United Way, and the Forgotten Children's Fund. Financial support for our community partners comes from the Club's operating budget and is specifically approved by the Board of Governors. Also, the Club's executives offer their time by serving on the boards of these and other nonprofits in the community. One of the ideas that has been discussed among Club leadership in recent years is the concept of setting up a Washington Athletic Club foundation. As my year as Chairman of the Board comes to a close, I look forward to continuing this discussion as Immediate Past Chairman. The establishment of a charitable foundation would allow us to accomplish several new things, and members' donations would be tax-deductible. Proceeds could be used to fund entities and projects within our walls and throughout the community. A board of directors would oversee distributions. For example, foundation funds could be used to perform needed capital expenditures on historic areas of our facility—a designated Seattle historic landmark. Another possible use would be to provide scholarship money for employees and their children. A foundation would allow us to fund and support organized athletic programs, with the belief that such activities enrich young lives and nurture future community leaders. I'd also like to take a moment to look back on my time as Chairman, which I do with great fondness. I want to thank you all for the privilege of serving in this position. I have particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside the staff as well as fellow Board of Governors and committee members toward our goal of making the WAC the best city athletic club in America. It's been a great year, and I anticipate many more. As we move forward, I hope you'll keep up with our talks on establishing a WAC foundation and consider supporting its efforts. It's a privilege to be a WAC member and an honor to be able to help others and to give back to our community. 4 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | JUNE / JULY 2013
