8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | APRIL 2014 Memories: 1968 By Sara Williams 2005 DenHoed Wine Estates, "Marie's View," Horse Heaven Hills, Washington Tasting Notes: This Syrah–based blend mixes a healthy dose of Cabernet Sauvignon and shows dark ruby on the rim with subtle streaks of violet. The nose has earth and dust that waft up to entice you at first taste. With heavy French and American oak aging, flavors of caramel, fragrant cardamom, Bing cherry, and tobacco sit on your palate. A rich, supple and silky mouthfeel leave you wanting another sip. Discovery: The Den Hoed family has been farming and harvesting since its immigration to the U.S. from Holland in 1948. After visiting Sunnyside, Washington, in 1953, the family fell in love with the Northwest and relocated from New Jersey. Family members began to plant vineyards in the Yakima Valley, and their acreage continued to expand through the next three decades. In 1997, the family purchased 550 acres bordering the Columbia River in the Wallula Gap and has been harvesting some of the state's best quality grapes ever since. —Sara A. Sommelier's Selection By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair THE BEST OF THE OPERA The WAC sold tickets to Joan Sutherland's renowned performance of Don Giovanni at the Seattle Opera House. The show sold out fast, and WAC members with ticket reservations considered themselves very lucky. ROLLING ONWARD The windows in the Oak and Ember rooms were torn out and replaced with bricks as part of the prelude to the building of a parking garage in the area south of the WAC. Plans to refurbish the WAC's bowling alley on the 2nd Floor for the first time in 30 years also were in place, and included new floors, gutters, pin decks, and pins. BOWLING CHAMPS The WAC's women's bowling team brought home a $44 cash prize after placing eighth in the 32nd annual City Tournament of the Greater Seattle Women's Bowling Association. BEER BLAST Members of the steering committee got a head start organizing the annual spring stag beer festival. The festival featured prizes, feasts, souvenirs, and, of course, plenty of hops. SUMMERTIME LOVING In celebration of May's warm sunshine, the WAC beauty salon { BUZZ } sold an arrangement of colorful swimwear. Meanwhile, downstairs in the lobby gift shop—called the cigar stand back then—members were able to purchase Emilio Pucci perfume, soap, dusting powder, and bath oil. LADY GOSSIP Doris Lilly, writer for Cosmopolitan and the New York Post, spoke at the Club's Friday morning lecture series. Lilly's first book, How to Marry a Millionaire, became a famous movie starring Marilyn Monroe. Artistic success ART ENTHUSIASTS WORLDWIDE KNOW Gregory Blackstock as the award-winning Seattle artist famous for his encyclopedic drawings. At the WAC, Greg is known as the long-time team member who worked here as a dishwasher for 36 years. This year, Greg is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his first solo exhibition, held at Garde Rail Gallery in Austin, Texas. "His work is unbelievable," WAC Executive Chef Eric Floyd says. "When his art finally took off, it was great to see him flourish." A collection of Greg's work is currently showcased for sale at Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle's Pioneer Square neighborhood.
