Rugby star By Naomi Thalenberg Miles Craigwell, 27, always had an itch to play professional sports. He just didn't always realize rugby was his calling. After playing football at Brown University and in the NFL, Miles landed a spot on the U.S. men's national sevens rugby team in 2010. The Kibble & Prentice sales executive currently trains with the Serevi Selects international team and the Old Puget Sound Beach Rugby Club, and he hopes to make the 2016 U.S. Olympic team. How did you move from football to rugby? Rugby kind of chose me. I found myself in a diner grabbing breakfast and the men's national sevens collegiate rugby championships were playing on the TV. I was immediately blown away by the athletes. I contacted my agent that day and told him to get in touch with the team's coach. What has rugby introduced you to that other sports didn't? The camaraderie of my teammates and opponents is superior. Also, rugby fans are by far the craziest fans on the international stage. In the next few months, you'll compete in Las Vegas, New Zealand, Japan, and Hong Kong, to name just a few. What's a typical training week look like? I work out with teammate Mike Palefau. We generally work out in the weight room at the WAC. Once or twice a week we meet with the Club's trainers. We work on a combination of exercises to increase mobility, strength, explosion and fitness. Aside from the 2016 Olympics, what keeps you motivated? My motivation stems from my immediate family members. All of my family and most of my relatives have participated in either collegiate athletics or professional athletics, so sport has always been a huge structure in my life. lengthen and improve alignment, coordination and balance.
