{ member to member } Written by Suzie Schofield | Photography by Barbara Kinney Friends & colleagues come together at the wac { Norm Seabrooks } Member since 2003 N orm Seabrooks is the Pacific Northwest president of Aetna. He moved to Seattle 12 years ago and was quickly introduced to the WAC. "From the very beginning, I loved the camaraderie," he says. "A friend and colleague recommended the Club. We work across the street, so it's very convenient." Norm's story is one of personal struggle, but it has a happy ending. While vacationing in California during the summer of 2010, Norm stood up and collapsed to the floor. When doctors reviewed his MRI, they found his spinal column completely shattered. Some of the first calls he received after the incident were from WAC friends, including Vice President Athletics Wayne Milner and former President & CEO Jim Johnson. "They were calling me from the first moment they heard I was in the hospital," Norm recalls. "The genuine affection that came through for me in a time when I needed it most was incredible." Despite a 50-day hospital stay and an early prognosis of probable paralysis, Norm beat the odds and made a full recovery. "A lot of my rehabilitation was done at the WAC alongside regular doctor visits," he explains. "I still live with chronic pain. It's a constant reminder of what's important in life. I'll take the pain any day for the chance to spend time with my three kids." His children also enjoy the WAC, and Norm and his family periodically share dinners at the Club and attend social functions. Norm is also quick to share the WAC. 22 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | AUGUST 2013
