Boeing Classic ready to tee off WAC members enjoy free tickets and great golf W ashington Athletic Club members who are golf fans don't need to look far to see some of the world's finest golfers compete. The Boeing Classic is played at the gorgeous TPC Snoqualmie Ridge and showcases the talents of the Champions Tour's best. "We are very excited about this group of players," tournament director Michelle DeLancy says of the 2013 field that will take to the local links later this month. WAC members and others around Puget Sound will be thrilled to learn that Fred Couples is again slated to play. So are other greats, such as Rocco Mediate and Colin Montgomerie. In its eight-year history, the tournament has ended in a playoff four times, including the last two years. In 2007, the tournament finished with a remarkable seven-man playoff. There are several high-risk, high-reward holes down the stretch that can help golfers build a late comeback, including the 14th. The signature hole on the course horseshoes around Bear's Canyon. "The way the course is set up makes the tournament very competitive. The players are very competitive, and it really makes it 16 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | AUGUST 2013 anybody's game," DeLancy says. It also makes for a fun fan experience. The tournament's impact, however, extends beyond players and fans. Proceeds from the event help support The First Tee of Greater Seattle and the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason. During the past eight years, more than $4 million has been raised. "The WAC has been involved with the tournament since day one, and we are honored to be community partners with an event that raises money for such great causes," WAC Vice President Athletics Wayne Milner says. WAC members receive free entry as general spectators with their membership card and can upgrade to Canyon Club tickets for just $15. Those include a view from a VIP skybox and a complimentary drink. Some members also choose to volunteer with the tournament. The event runs largely on the power of its volunteers, whose jobs regularly put them near the action. The Boeing Classic takes place August 19–25 with the main tournament running August 23–25. August 23 is Kids Day and there will be a Boeing flyover to start. Sunday, the final day, is Military Appreciation Day and will have a military flyover. Whether as a spectator or volunteer, WAC members can enjoy this tournament for all the excitement it brings and all the good that it does in the community.
