{Buzz} Head over Heels Memories: 1962 By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair Smart investors Mary Lee Teigh, president of the associate women, lectured a sixweek course called Fundamentals of Investing. The course taught members how to evaluate the financial status of a company, how to compare a company with its competitors, and how to judge the management of a company. Special Olympics Washington is a WAC Community Partner, but this is the Club's first year participating in Over the Edge. The event isn't for the acrophobic, though Paul says he fits the description. Then again, he says, rappelling over the side of a perfectly good skyscraper is one way to conquer his fear—and support a great cause. A new era for dance An article in WAC News featured a new series of dance classes that were as modern as the monorail and as exciting as the Space Needle. The classes featured six courses in the spring. Members learned the cha-cha-cha, charanga, merengue, samba, and more. Happy birthday, Helene Family time A new event called Family Night began in October. The event featured a complimentary film in the auditorium, followed by a Sunday buffet in the 3rd Floor dining room. The first film on the schedule was the NASA production Mastery of Space. 8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | AUGUST 2013 2 3 The Club bought the former Labor Temple on Sixth Avenue and University Street, a 52- by 120foot structure that was known as 604 University Building. The building was used as temporary Club parking and offered twodozen car spaces. The building was demolished the following fall and is now home to One Union Square. Jon Scott, a well-known global reporter and assistant to the publisher at Time magazine, spoke at the Club. The lecture and dinner focused on the role of the U.S. in global affairs. The event cost $3.75 and was open to members and guests. 1 Mini cupcakes, cookies, a birthday banner, and balloons adorned Helene Madison Pool this past July 19 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the pool's namesake. In 1932, at age 19, Helene Madison became the first female swimmer to win three gold medals in the Olympics. Today, she remains the only female to ever hold every single freestyle swimming record simultaneously. A growing Club Global knowledge Exercise of the Month L u k e R u ta n When Paul Ravetta reaches the top of 1000 Second Ave. in downtown Seattle, he won't be coming back down the elevator or stairs. Paul, a resident member of the Board of Governors, will rappel down the 40-story building at Special Olympics Washington's annual Over the Edge fundraiser, set for August 10–11. "I hope I don't scream," Paul jokes. A UGU S T | 2 0 1 3 A WAC member, Helene Madison was at one time the most famous swimmer on the planet. The WAC Pool, where she trained under the tutelage of coach Ray Daughters, was named in her honor in 1968. Helene died at age 57 in 1970. WAC personal Trainer Darrick Kung demonstrates the Bosu single-leg dead lift. This exercise improves balance and strength, as well as ankle, knee and trunk stability. 1. Place one foot on center of Bosu ball. 2-3. Hinge at hips and bend standing knee so torso comes close to parallel with ground. Maintain slight bend in non-standing knee. To finish, squeeze glutes and hamstrings and return to upright position. Repeat six to 10 times.
