Reciprocal Club Union League Club, New York By Michelle Abbess, Director Member Services Meet our new partner in New York City Rub elbows with Manhattan's elite at Union League Club UNION LEAGUE CLUB Michelle Abbess is Director Member Services. Send her feedback on your reciprocal club visits at mabbess@wac.net. For reciprocal letters of introduction or more information, call Member Services at 206.464.3068 or email membership@wac.net. T he Union League Club is the most recent addition to our reciprocal club network. Recommended for inclusion by multiple savvy WAC members, this Old World–style club offers stately options for overnight accommodation, dining, exercise, and socializing in the heart of Manhattan. From the very beginning, the Union League Club has been extremely civic-minded. In fact, it was founded in 1863 to help preserve the Union and provide funding for Union soldiers. In 1870, club members were instrumental in establishing the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as the Sanitary Commission, a predecessor organization to the American Red Cross. It is also said that Union League Club members helped erect the Statue of Liberty. In the early 1930s, the family of J.P. Morgan donated property to the Union League Club to build its fourth and present clubhouse. Located in midtown Manhattan at 37th and Park, the brick and brownstone mansion is 10 stories tall, with a striking mahogany and marble-clad entry and grand staircase. During your visit, be sure to check out the impressive two-story library that channels the energy of the New York Public Library, which also happens to be right around the corner. And don't miss the prime networking opportunities. While in the Union League bar, you may rub shoulders with congressmen, diplomats, cabinet members, and prominent CEOs. Whether you're staying overnight or looking for a place to cement your next business deal, the Union League Club of New York will not disappoint. 10 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2015
