26 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2015 S heila Walsh, a WAC member since 1980 but a competitive cyclist only within the past five years, placed fourth in the 60- to 64-year-old age group during the finals of the UCI World Cycling Tour in Denmark. Sheila raced her way through the city of Aalborg on a scenic, 115-kilometer course. "It was so inspiring to be racing with the best women in the world," she says. Sheila earned the right to race at worlds by winning the USA Cycling Nationals in 2014, which she considers to be her biggest cycling accomplishment. C arol Coram qualified to race in the International Triathlon Union 2016 World Championships next September in Cozumel, Mexico. Carol qualified with her performance in the Olympic-distance race at the USA Triathlon National Championships in Milwaukee this past summer, competing in the women's 65- to 69-year-old category. Carol also recently served as an official at this year's triathlon world championships in Chicago. Her favorite part was watching the paratriathletes compete. "It was inspiring," she says. A longtime track and field athlete, Carol also officiated at the 1996 Olympic Games. She joined the WAC in 1995. WAC members Amy Merten and Andres Hernandez also competed at nationals in Milwaukee. W AC Tri/Cycle coach Julie Vieselmeyer competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Austria this past August. Julie qualified for her spot in Austria at the Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens race in August 2014. Earlier this season, Julie placed third in the 30- to 34-year-old women's age group at the Ironman 70.3 Vineman in Northern California and second in the Coeur d'Alene Triathlon Olympic-distance race. Julie trains twice daily and is also working on a doctorate in clinical psychology. Jan Mayes will run in the New York Marathon on November 1. Julie Glade will compete in the Ironman 70.3 Austin on November 8 and the Ironman Cozumel on November 29. Greg Sancewich and David Cook will also compete in Cozumel. Carolina Hernandez competed in the Iron Girl Seattle.
