Written by Melinda Young-Flynn | Photography by Barbara Kinney { HERB AND JON BRIDGE } Members since 1968 and 1976 { M E M B E R T O M E M B E R } FATHER & SON COME TOGETHER AT THE WAC H erb Bridge, the 89-year-old retired chairman of Ben Bridge Jeweler—he'll turn 90 this March—is proud of his status as a regular at Torchy's. "He spends most of his time taking people to breakfast there these days," his son Jon, Ben Bridge co-CEO and general counsel, jokes. Herb's enthusiasm for the WAC has been going strong for five decades. He and his late wife Shirley used to attend dances in the Crystal Ballroom and later in the Johnson Lobby Lounge. A former WAC Board of Governors Chairman ('93), Herb also played handball at the Club for years. Every December, the retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral still attends a Pearl Harbor remembrance reception with other World War II veterans at the Top of the WAC. Jon, a retired Navy Captain and Vietnam veteran, shares his father's love of the WAC. He exercised at the Club in high school and got his own membership after law school in 1976. Two years later, Jon obtained a joint membership when he married Bobbe, who is now the CEO of the Center for Children & Youth Justice—and a Coed Fitness regular. Jon and Herb smile when recounting their many personal and professional experiences with the WAC through the years. Just recently, Jon stood by his father's side when Herb received the "Torchy" Torrance Award from the 101 Club. It was another meaningful father-son moment at the WAC. 18 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | FEBRUARY / MARCH 2015 If you have friends, family or colleagues you feel would benefit from WAC membership, please contact Member Services at 206.464.3068 or membership@wac.net to arrange a tour.
