The WAC has roughly 200 member volunteers at any given time who sit on a total of 16 different committees. The Board of Governors and Program Board combined are comprised of a minimum of 55 member leaders. Committee and Board volunteers play an important and vital role in providing oversight and guidance to the WAC executive team. Some of the critical activities include: • Approving or denying new membership applications • Reviewing and approving plans for Club capital improvements • Providing advice to Human Resources on compensation and benefits • Approving suspensions or terminations for delinquent accounts • Amending and adopting any proposed changes to the WAC Bylaws Another important role of the Club's committee structure is to nominate a new slate of Board members for each year's Board election. People often ask me how I came to be involved in WAC governance. Here's my abbreviated story: It started 18 years ago this month, when I was attending a company retreat with my then-employer, The Norman Company. The topic of discussion was best practices for business networking. One of my colleagues—and a fellow WAC member, Macgregor Miller—proceeded to call me out for my lack of involvement with WAC volunteer opportunities. He pointed out my frequent use of the Club (at least six days a week at that time) and the missed opportunity of not becoming more involved. I was in complete agreement with his observation. The very next week, I contacted Tamela Thomas, then the Vice President of WAC Athletics, to express my interest in joining the Athletic Committee. The timing was fortuitous as Tamela had just started assembling a list of committee candidates for the upcoming term. A few weeks later, I officially joined the Athletic Committee. This turned out to be a great decision, both professionally and personally. I learned how a successful committee structure operates and made many new lifelong friends. This committee involvement eventually led to an invitation to join the Board of Governors. That was more than 12 years ago. Today, I'm proud to serve as your Chairman of the Board. I share this story because the WAC is always looking for good candidates to fill these important committee positions. If you have an interest in getting involved in member leadership opportunities, please tell one of the Club executives. Their contact information is right across the way on page 5. See you around the WAC! Celebrating our leadership—you
