24 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | OCTOBER 2014 celebrated in encouraging him to get back to the gym. He did so eagerly and within a few months had regained his energy and was working out every weekday morning. At the time, Charleen was training for her first Ironman. Inspired by her efforts and looking for a post-illness challenge, Scott decided to train for his own Ironman. Part of his regimen involved swimming at Helene Madison Pool and working out with Scotty. The two men are close friends, exchanging jokes and smiling easily as they work out. "It has been nothing short of awesome to watch him gain his life back," Scotty says. Between 2013 and this past May, Scott Lundberg finished three half-Ironmans. In July, he completed the big one. Three years after his treatment ended, he swam 2.4 miles, biked 112, and ran 26.2 in Ironman Canada, one of North America's most challenging courses. "I am grateful to be healthy enough to do something so significant," he says. And he's not slowing down. Scott is already training for an Ironman in 2015. W HEN JOY BURGESS and WAC Pilates Instructor Marywilde Nelson get together, they look like old friends as they laugh and tell stories. Joy took her first class with Marywilde 11 years ago. Joy's daughter, WAC member Robin Johnson, joined her for that initial lesson. "Robin and I laughed a lot in those first classes because we felt so clumsy," Joy says. "But Marywilde was wonderful and so patient." Joy, now a retired pharmacist, fell in love with Pilates and quickly became a regular. A hiker and walker, she had never consistently attended any fitness class before. These days, Joy's involvement in Pilates seems especially poignant. After a breast cancer diagnosis in 2006, the 70-year- old is not only cancer-free, but she is also vibrant and active. Joy's diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma came in October 2006. "I wasn't terrified because I'd known several people who'd had that diagnosis and had been OK," she says.
