OCTOBER 2014 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | 23 S COTT LUNDBERG can't contain his enthusiasm when talking about the first Ironman triathlon he completed, in Whistler, British Columbia, this past July. "It was an epic event that took three years to train for, so I am still excited about it," he says. Looking at the strong and quick-to-smile 53-year-old, you'd never guess that a few years ago he was given only a 50 percent chance of staying alive. The Seattle attorney was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in December 2010. "It was surreal news," he says. "Just a few weeks earlier I had completed the Dallas Marathon." Nevertheless, Scott says he never allowed himself to believe he wouldn't overcome it. Instead, he focused on the good news: His physicians believed his particular strain of lymphoma was less aggressive than others. His treatment began in January 2011. It involved six months of intense 21-day cycles of chemotherapy. His wife, WAC member Charleen Lundberg, helped take care of him. His children, 11-year-old Scott, 13-year-old Kaysa, and 19-year-old stepson Connor, also helped lift his spirits. One of Scott's visitors during treatment was WAC Per- sonal Trainer Scotty Spraggins. Visit Coed Fitness on the 4th Floor on any given day, and there's a good chance you'll see Scotty's perpetual positivity on display. That infectious personality was exactly what Scott Lundberg needed during his fight—not to mention a warm dinner cooked by Scotty's wife. Three months into chemotherapy, Scott received welcome news. The doctors believed the cancer cells had been eliminated. He had to continue the full course of chemo for safe measure, but he says the exhausting process became more bearable once he knew it was working. In July 2011, Scott finished treatment. The cancer cells were gone. He jokes that Charleen wasted no time after they • Scott Lundberg's workouts include plenty of cycling as well as gym time with wife Charleen and WAC Personal Trainer Scotty Spraggins.
