Memories: 1954 By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair GAME OF OPERATOR WAC switchboard operators were for two months, without knowing it, tested by the telephone and telegraph company. In six out of seven categories, the operators posted perfect scores, with no faults on 100 calls. In the seventh category, operators made only one-third of the allowable minimum faults. Afterward, OCTOBER | 2012 All in the Family SIX-MONTH-OLD Catherine Elizabeth Yon became a fourth generation WAC member earlier this year, joining the Club her great- grandparents first joined in the 1950s. Catherine, born in April, enjoyed the Mother Daughter Tea at just 12 days old and already has taken a liking to Helene Madison Pool and WeeWACs. At four weeks old, she made the trip to the 9th Floor for her first WAC identification card photo. "She's been good and hasn't charged anything on it yet," joked mom Rose Mitchell. Catherine's dad is Frank Yon. Frank's grandparents, John and Lucille Deines, were WAC members starting in the early 1950s. Frank's parents, Frank and Anna Yon, had their wedding reception at the Club in 1968. Anna Yon, nee Deines, took swim lessons from Helene Madison herself. Rose's uncle and aunt, Jack and Irene Mitchell, were also WAC members. Rose joined in 2003 and brought Frank and his mom back to the Club. Rose said the family has made many fun memories at the WAC and looks forward to many more. testers called the Club switchboard service "as good as any in town." THOSE WILD 20S Senior Twenties members and their wives and guests held an informal cocktail hour on the 21st Floor and then gathered for a regular Saturday dance in the Arcade Room, now the West Room on the 3rd Floor. They also planned a summer handball tournament, formal dances, and a stag cocktail party. ED SULLIVAN AT WAC Superstar television personality Ed Sullivan emceed the Club's 16th annual Athletic Awards Banquet. BREAKING GROUND Groundbreaking ceremonies for the addition of the south section of the Clubhouse attracted many WAC dignitaries as well as Seattle Mayor Allan Pomeroy and dozens of other local familiar faces, along with newspaper, radio and television reporters. FIVE-OCTAVE WONDER The Club hosted a party for the beautiful Peruvian soprano Yma Sumak, whose five-octave range was unforgettable and achieved international fame. Sommelier's Selection By Sara A. Williams 2003 DeLille Cellars, Harrison Hill, Yakima Valley, Washington Catherine Yon receives her first WAC member card with parents Frank and Rose. TASTING NOTES: A complex wine combining elegance and power, this vintage reveals a medium- to full- bodied core. The nose shows violet floral characteristics, sweet tobacco and leather with elegant cherry and oak to finish. This is a classic Bordeaux of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This wine reveals a satin texture with hints of spicy blackberries. Rich and supple plum with late tannins and white peppercorn balance out the finish. DISCOVERY: DeLille Cellars uses sustainable farming to cultivate its vineyards. Harrison Hill is the second-oldest Cabernet vineyard in the state. Chris Upchurch spent many sunny days working the land to ensure the grapes have perfect ripeness. I highly recommend stopping by Torchy's for an aged bottle from the list. Or you may consider one of the DeLille tasting rooms to enjoy Upchurch's newest release. Whether you enjoy white or red, Upchurch's winemaking methods truly inspire. Cheers! —Sara A. Williams is a WAC Restaurant Manager and a Level 1 Sommelier. BARBARA KINNEY
