Send her feedback on your reciprocal club visits at mvanslack@wac.net irginia earned its nickname "Mother of Presidents" for being the birthplace of eight U.S. commanders in chief—more than any other state. Couple that with Virginia's self-proclaimed designation as a place "for lovers," and you begin to suspect a correla- tion emerging. I'll leave it to you and your paramour to investigate further with a trip to the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. The club was established in 1896 and moved to its current location on the calm banks of the Lafayette River in 1908. Since then, the facilities have been continually upgraded and improved, yet the club's focus on sailing and Southern hospitality have remained unaltered. The hospitality is especially plentiful at all three waterfront dining options, located on two levels of the 50,000-square-foot clubhouse. Varied from casual to more formal, all offer spectacular sunset views. While you're there, be sure to keep an eye out for the LOVE artwork on display, a not-so-subtle reminder that Virginia is indeed for lovers. Your first glimpse may be the giant letters on display at the Norfolk International Airport. » October 7–14: The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race: from Baltimore, Maryland, to Portsmouth, Virginia » October 20–21: Town Point Virginia Wine Festival in downtown Norfolk For reciprocal letters of introduction or more information, call Member Services at 206.464.3068 or email membership@wac.net. 10 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | OCTOBER 2012
