A few years later at the University of Washington, he represented the Huskies—"very unofficially"—at two collegiate national tournaments, filling the role of player, coach, captain, trainer and funder. Today, Tom, age 39, is regarded as the best handball player at the WAC. What do you like most about handball? It's a good workout. It's physically demanding, and it works your left and right side. I also really enjoy the people. The handball community is pretty small, so you start to know everybody. Any tips for young players? You need to be equally good with both hands. Do whatever you can to develop coordination in your off-hand. If you're right-handed, By Darrick Meneken start eating with your left hand. When you're playing, pick on your opponent's off-hand. Outside of handball, how do you stay fit? I try to run twice a week and try to push the weights twice a week. I also try to get in a swim or ride my bike. What has been the apex of your playing career? At this point I'd say I haven't gotten there yet. I don't think I'm the best I'll ever be. Why the WAC? The camaraderie, really. I'm a big fan of the current handball members. I also like the location. Can you imagine life without your sport? No. Handball is so ingrained in my personality that if I don't play on a somewhat frequent basis then I'm a different person. OCTOBER 2012 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | 49
