{BUZZ} Happy 104th birthday! CLIFFORD BARTELLS, Left to right: Amelia Carnell, Jennifer Mesler and Pilar Letrondo at Seward Park. Diving in TWO WAC YOUTH SWIMMERS AND COACH JENNIFER the WAC's oldest living member, turns 104 this October 14. Clifford was born in 1908, six years before the start of World War I. Theodore Roosevelt was president, Ernest Shackleton trekked Antarctica, and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid were reportedly killed in Mesler competed in the Emerald City Open Water Swim this past August. Amelia Carnell, 11, swam in the open water for the first time and placed second in her age group. Pilar Letrondo, 16, swam in the event for the second time. All three WAC swimmers completed the half-mile event in Andrews Bay, off the shore of Seward Park, in Lake Washington. A Bridge for youth LONGTIME WAC MEMBER BOBBE BRIDGE WAS HONORED as a Woman of Inspiration during halftime of a Seattle Storm game this past August. Bobbe founded the nonprofit Center for Children & Youth Justice in 2006 to reform Washington state's child welfare and juvenile justice systems. She served as a judge in the state Supreme Court and King County Superior Court from 1990–2008, and her work as an advocate for foster care reform, victims of domestic violence, and truancy prevention have earned national recognition. She currently chairs the state Supreme Court Commission on Children in Foster Care, and was awarded the Storm's 2012 Ginger Ackerley Community Service Award. Bobbe's father- in-law, Herb, served as WAC President in 1992–1993. 6 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | OCTOBER 2012 Bolivia—not that Clifford witnessed any of that. Asked the 1 2 secret of his longevity, Bartells leaned forward in a green chair in his living room on Mercer Island, where he's lived in the same house since 1964: "The only thing I can think of that you have to do is keep having birthdays." short walks every day and tries to eat well. Clifford was born in Tacoma, attended Stadium High School, and raised two daughters, now 72 and 74. He also has two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1930, did a year of graduate study at M.I.T., and worked for American Can Co. from 1931–1973, retiring as Seattle plant manager. Clifford joined the WAC in 1937 and was a member until 1948. He rejoined in 1964. (Place hands on ground directly below shoulders and push up to plank position. Back should be flat.) 2. Keeping abs engaged and legs straight, pull hips as high as you can into pike position without arching back. 3. Lower hips back to plank position.
