18 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2016 MEMBERS IN MOTION MARIA SEMPLE'S third novel, Today Will Be Different, will be released on October 4. It is Semple's first novel since the hugely successful Where'd You Go, Bernadette. The new book tells the story of Eleanor Flood, a Seattle mother and wife stuck in her routine and committed to change her life in a single day. The novel leaves readers laughing while tackling the collective angst of modern-day America and has received high praise from fellow authors Gillian Flynn, Lauren Groff, and Jess Walter. Kirkus Reviews said: "[Semple] is on her way to becoming a national treasure." Maria joined the WAC in 2009. She'll be reading at a ticketed event at Town Hall on Saturday, October 8. Health Perspectives Group President & CEO CHERYL LUBBERT, a former microbiologist, was featured on the cover of the June 2016 edition of Seattle Business magazine. Cheryl, a WAC member since 2012, was one of eight "enterprising women" highlighted by the publication. Health Perspectives Group began as a platform to connect patients sharing their health stories with the healthcare industry and now includes four patient engagement firms with $14 million in annual sales. "We have the power to make our lives anything we want them to be," Cheryl told the magazine. "It's about having a sense of fearlessness.'' Cheryl uses the WAC to work out and network. "With our headquarters downtown, we have come to rely on the WAC for company meetings and functions," she says. "The space is gorgeous, the food is fantastic, and the staff is courteous and helpful." KATE DANDEL made her feature- length documentary directorial debut with the showing of Gold Balls at the Seattle International Film Festival this past May. The 85-minute documentary follows a group of active senior citizens chasing their next "gold ball," the awards given to the winners of ultra-senior tennis tournaments. The movie thrilled audiences with its humor and sentiment. Gold Balls also showed at the Rhode Island International Film Festival in August, and Kate will attend the Chagrin Valley Documentary Film Festival in Ohio this October. She hopes to soon make the movie available for download and on DVD. Kate joined the WAC in 2000. "I really hope people connect with the theme that being a champion isn't just about winning," Kate says. "It's about staying in the fight, practicing with purpose, embracing the risk of failure, and engaging in positive relationships with others along the way."
