Speeding down the slopes By Naomi Thalenberg Clare Wise started skiing when she was 4 years old. By the time she was 8, she was skiing with the Mission ridge Ski Team in her hometown of Wenatchee. She's finished in the top three more than a dozen times and logged multiple victories. as a sophomore at University of Colorado Boulder, Clare majors in chemical and biological engineering while racing for the Buffaloes' alpine team. We caught up with her to talk about the upcoming season and her personal goals. What's your typical skiing season like? There are 12 of us on the alpine team. On weekends we set up training courses early in the morning on eldora Mountain resort. Then we spend the morning training. Throughout the week, we also lift three days and cycle three to four days for dryland conditioning. Prior to college, you faced many obstacles and battled injuries. What motivated you to get back on the mountain? i've always dreamed of being on a nCaa ski team in college. When i broke my leg in 2011, i knew that if i wanted to keep skiing i had to never abandon ship. i want to retire [from skiing] after gaining everything i can. Do you ever get scared skiing at high speeds? it can definitely get scary. i try to stick to my fundamentals as much as possible. i go out and do what i need to do to be fast, and i'm also aware of the skills that'll get me from top to bottom safely. What do you recommend to young skiers out there? Be passionate about it and have fun. The more fun you're having the more successful you'll be. 48 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2013 Court reservations: 206.464.3095 Info: www.internationalcourtsoccer.com racquetball Quickie The WAC Racquetball Club invites all players to join in round-robin play on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
