We are a 5 Star Platinum Award–winning club. We have the best fitness facilities in Seattle, an inn that competes at the highest level, and food and beverage offerings that serve children and sophisticated palates with expertise. But what truly stands behind our accolades? I suggest it's simple: The WAC fills our need to belong. We need to connect with others. It's in our DNA. Families, sports teams, academic societies—you name it, we're meant to belong and to connect with others. (By the way, you'll find this theme throughout this issue of WAC Magazine.) One of the interesting things about the WAC is that although we renovate the facility to keep up with competitive standards, the actual offerings within the Club are always being updated. The refinement of Club offerings is based upon member input, which is in turn carried to our committees and leadership team. Member engagement is how we make this our Club. Our engagement is what drives us to belong. One thing life teaches us is that when we put in effort we usually get better results. We learn that in school and in our careers. Effort equates to better grades or a better job. The same applies to our WAC experience. If a member comes solely to workout, they can do that and do it very well. But I would contend that the members who have the highest satisfaction are those who go beyond what initially brought them to the Club. They join the basketball league, Handball Club, Wine Club, Tri/Cycle Club, Women of the WAC, or any number of other groups. They engage in things beyond their initial interest, and they find camaraderie and an enhanced sense of belonging. I certainly don't expect every member to have the same experience I have had in my 13 years at the WAC. But I'll tell you this, if you put in just a little effort to explore the Club, you'll have a whole lot of fun and meet some amazing people. The question is, what activity will you add to expand your WAC experience? 4 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2013 Best,
