8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2016 Memories: 1986 By Dee Sanwick, WAC Historian FINNISH FUN Members spent Christmas skiing in Helsinki and New Year's Eve drinking champagne in Rovaniemi—both in Finland. They also enjoyed sightseeing, shopping, a fur fashion show, and a reindeer-led sleigh ride. AHOY, MATEY! Club members could spend their summer sailing with Laurie Lorence, a local skipper and WAC member. Classes were held on land and on the water. DOMINO DEVOTEES A Pacific Northwest open dominoes championship was held at the Club, with WAC teams taking first and second place. KITCHEN UPGRADE The entire second floor was closed for remodeling, during which the Club received a new kitchen. PARTY TIME Members celebrated WAC Bash II, a complimentary social and athletic event for those ages 35 and under. WAC Bash II included aerobics, basketball, swimming, and more. After working out, members spent the night eating, drinking and dancing. LAW WOMAN Noreen Skagen, Seattle's first female assistant chief of police, spoke at the Club. A graduate of the FBI national academy, Skagen was one of the highest- ranking women in American law enforcement at the time. C H R I S J . The North American Association of Club Athletic Directors (NACAD) honored the WAC with its 2016 Athletic Event of the Year award. "This is quite an honor," Senior Vice President Athletics, Special Projects & Community Partners Wayne Milner said. The NACAD award recognized the inaugural Sorensen & Scholz Collegiate Rugby Player of the Year award ceremony, hosted by the WAC this past June. "To create this award and be recognized for it by our peers is very satisfying," Wayne says. He accepted the honor at the 2016 NACAD annual conference. CALLING ALL WAC KIDS. All ages are welcome to this free, entertaining, and, let's be honest, somewhat odd annual event. Be at the pool, on the 6th Floor, from 9–11 am on Saturday, October 29.
