Mattias Klum with Johan Rockström: "The Big Picture" at Benaroya Hall Monday, April 30 It all started 57 years ago over martinis at the WAC: a vision for a downtown improvement project that incorporated futuristic elements from the world of the Jetsons and brought to life the iconic Space Needle. In homage to this milestone meet- ing, step back in time as we begin at the WAC with a martini, 1960s-themed hors d'oeuvres, and a short presentation by Lorraine McConaghy, public historian at the Museum of History and Industry. McConaghy will discuss the legacy of The Century 21 Exposition, which used the most modern technology available at the time to take Seattle into the future and help establish it as a world-class city. We'll ride the monorail to the site of the fair and take an exclusive flashback tour of the grounds, architecture and history. We'll look at fair Photographer Mattias Klum will report on his latest expeditions to the world's last wild places. Joined by prominent scientist Johan Rockström, he'll blend award- winning imagery with groundbreaking insights to deepen our understanding of our natural world. Join Klum on an awe- inspiring journey to such far-flung destina- tions as Iceland, West Papua and Botswana, and experience nature's beauty through striking new photographs and video. 7:30 pm; $26–$32; noncancelable/ nonrefundable Seattle Opera's Madama Butterfly Sunday, May 20 Puccini's century-old opera, Madama Butterfly, tells the story of an American Naval officer named Pinkerton who is smitten with a Japanese maiden. The young maiden, nicknamed Butterfly, secretly sacrifices her religion to Americanize herself for him before they marry. Pinkerton secretly plans to divorce her once he finds a proper American wife. He leaves Butterfly and goes out to sea for three years. When he finally returns, Butterfly can't wait to introduce him to his two-year-old son. But Pinkerton has already remarried and brings his new wife with him to meet Butterfly. This story of traditions, romance, yearning and tragedy is one of the world's most- beloved operas.
