WAC® MAGAZINE APRIL 2012 Volume 31, Number 4 ISSN 1091-7985 Letter from the President & CEO Chuck Nelson, President & Chief Executive Officer O A Club of great consistency— and of great change turbulent '60s. Afterward came the Seattle Boeing depression, followed by tech-fueled irrational exuberance, Y2K, 9/11, and eventually the mortgage meltdown and subse- quent Great Recession, the effects of which continue to linger. And yet, here we are: The WAC. For a club to not only make it through those times but also to thrive, it must change constantly. We must embrace the past, be nimble in the present, and adaptive looking forward. Our active, engaged member leaders and a vibrant committee struc- ture have been hallmarks of the WAC and portend a great future. We must constantly look at adding new opportunities throughout the WAC. Whether it be new menu items, such as gluten-free options in Torchy's and Hagerty's (see A la Carte, page 12) or podiatry services through the Wellness Center (see Wellness, page 16), or updating how we communicate with members, our commit- ment to improve continuously helps define our culture. As such, there will soon be some changes in how you hear from us. These repre- ne of the attractions of the Washington Athletic Club is its history and longevity. Just think of the Club's lifecycle thus far: Born in the Depression, we survived. From there, we entered World War II, then the bucolic 1950s and Washington Athletic Club® 1325 Sixth Ave., Seattle, WA 98101 206.622.7900 / fax 206.464.3058 www.wac.net / magazine@wac.net 206.464.4631 / fax 206.464.1392 Subscription: $36 / Single copies: $3 Published on the first day of each month Periodicals rate postage paid at Seattle, WA Publisher: Michelle Pinson Editor in Chief/Creative Director: Barbara Schmitt Managing Editor: Darrick Meneken Designer: Kelly Wang Designer: Anna De La Paz For advertising information: David Stolber Advertising & Marketing Sales Varsity Communications, Inc. p 206.367.2420, ext. 1204 • f 206.363.9099 david@varsitycommunications.com EXECUTIVE STAFF Chuck Nelson President & Chief Executive Officer cnelson@wac.net Robert Bonina Vice President Food & Beverage rbonina@wac.net Melissa Borders Vice President Club Programs mborders@wac.net Bill Cohen Vice President Operations wcohen@wac.net Dawn Dorsett Admin. The upgraded wac.net website was the start. Going forward we'll look at more social media interaction and more frequent and timely e-newsletters and email communications. We also will combine our May and June issues of WAC Magazine to create a Summer Issue that along with electronic connections will keep you aware of WAC news—both informative and entertaining. I also want to make you aware of something else happening this month. We're host- ing the national club basketball tournament from April 27–29. A dozen of America's top clubs will send teams to compete in seven different divisions, including a women's division. For more on the tournament and our own women's team, see pages 19–25. Finally, as we enter spring and look forward to summer, golf comes to mind. The WAC Golf Club offers access to many wonderful courses at reduced rates. Opportunities for on-course camaraderie and competition abound. And don't forget about the Boeing Classic, a WAC Community Partner, later this year. Now is the time to sign up to volunteer (see page 6). Much more on golf on pages 26–31. We've been your Club for a long time, and we're getting better every day. Take advantage of all that your Club offers. See you at the WAC.
