32 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014 THERE IS a quiet stillness to the art of Judith Kindler that at first glance can be deceptive. Familiar imagery—pinto ponies, sweet- faced young girls, a pile of books, or a pair of women's shoes—are placed or rendered in and around spatial, sometimes lonely environments and then transformed into expressive motifs through a variety of treat- ments, including collage, photography, wax encaustic, rubber, or resin. Narratives begin to emerge through juxtapositions of imagery and space. Ideas develop about the complexities of relationships and communication, societal interactions, politics, the environment, and other hot-button social issues. Judith has explored these themes for nearly two decades through her work in sculpture, installation, paintings, photogra- phy, and mixed media. The often large-scale artworks invite contemplation about the nature of humankind and our relationships with each other. So it follows that the Queen Anne-based artist enjoys coming to the Club to build rela- tionships and take advantage of its communal atmosphere. "My favorite times at the WAC are associated with social events," Judith says. Judith can be spotted in the Spa or at the Club's restaurants when she's not planning and producing art for the nine galleries that represent her throughout the United States. Her pieces are shown in galleries and in important private collections. This month, she has a solo exhibition opening at Gail Severn Gallery in Sun Valley, Idaho, and in November a show at Melissa Morgan Fine Art in Palm Desert. She is currently in the process of iden- tifying a museum for a large-scale installation, "Undaunted." A lot of her artwork, she says, is about "I know it's important to take care of myself if I want to keep being healthy enough to produce art for many more years to come. And the WAC will play an important role in that." — J U D I T H K I N D L E R Judith Kindler, V I S U A L A R T I S T Left: Judith in her Queen Anne studio, Atelier 31, with her dogs; Right: My Little Bird (2009), a mixed-media Judith Kindler original
