He was on a business trip and she was the daughter of one of his company's clients. They hit it off and started a long-distance relationship—she was from North Carolina and he was in Seattle. They married in 2000. As they settled into their new life together in Seattle, they sought ways to build community. Brian had previously had a great experience at the WAC, living at the Inn for several months when he moved to Seattle in 1994. (He had relocated from New York for a job and used his reciprocal benefit from the Williams Club of New York.) The couple thought the WAC seemed like a great fit. The Flynns joined the Club in 2004. They especially loved the activities the WAC offers children. Their kids Sophie and Chaz were ages 1 and 2 at the time. "Both our oldest kids learned to swim at the WAC with coach Jennifer Mesler," says Laurie. "We took them swimming twice a week." Over the past 10 years, the family, which now also includes 5-year-old Vivianne, takes advantage of just about every WAC family activity they can. "You name it, we've done it," says Laurie, a full-time mom who is on the WAC Program Board. Brian, who travels part of each month for his job as managing director at Columbia Equity Partners, enjoys attending such family activities when he's in town. He also appreciates that the Club is easy to get to from the family's Capitol Hill home for his workouts. 18 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014
