DeRRiCk Golf anD WinteR CluB Reciprocal Club: Derrick Golf and Winter Club By Michelle Van Slack, Director Member Services Curl under the aurora borealis Look north for loads of winter and water recreation N Michelle Van Slack is Director Member Services. Send her feedback on your reciprocal club visits at mvanslack@wac.net orth Americas most northerly city with a population over one millionEdmonton, Albertais home to the Derrick Golf and Winter Club, as well as the largest shopping mall in North America. The World Waterpark, one of many attractions in the mall, is a five-acre expanse with multiple waterslides, the worlds largest indoor wave pool, and a bungee jumping tower that allows you to safely fling yourself at the swimmers below. With regional recreation like this, its not surprising to find a family-friendly private club geared toward adventure nearby. The Derrick Club opened in 1959 and offers a large indoor aquatics center, an indoor curling facility, three outdoor tennis courts, and an 18-hole championship golf course. If the sport of curling has ever intrigued you while watching the Winter Olympics, then grab a brush and hit the ice. A full-time professional can help show you how to slide the heavy, polished granite stones (called rocks) toward the circular target on the ice (known as the house). Curling is a very popular sport in Edmonton, and the Derrick Clubs large four-sheet indoor facility offers the perfect setting to hone your skills. The heated saltwater pools in the aquatics center, meanwhile, invite frivolity as well as fitness. Along with five lap lanes, youll find a diving board, waterslide, rope swing, and waterfall sprinkler. When the family starts to prune, send them to the rock-climbing wall to get their belay on. Before or after all that swimming, rock climbing, curling and, of course, golf, you can grab a nosh in the main dining room, which offers a fantastic view of the golf course. During the winter months, you might also glimpse the northern lights dancing across the sky. All that, and a major metropolitan city right outside. 10 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | aPRil 2013 3500 119 Street NW Edmonton, AB T6J 5P5 780.437.1833 derrickclub.com NortherN lights Researchers have discovered that the activity of the aurora borealis is cyclic and peaks every 11 years and its peaking in 2013!
