WAC MAGAZINE APRIL 2013 Volume 32, Number 4 ISSN 1091-7985 Letter from the President & CEO Chuck Nelson, President & Chief Executive Officer / cnelson@wac.net Planning for the next generation A s a downtown-based club, the WAC experiences the majority of its activity on Monday through Friday, thanks in large part to the local business community. Our neighbors in nearby buildings have off-site meetings in the Club, our members leave their offices to get in a workout and have lunch, and others stop by to partake in happy hour or enjoy dinner at Torchys or Hagertys. No matter what our members are up to, they experience the advantages offered by the central location of our historic facility. The busy-ness of the Seattle city core is evidenced by people using their neighborhood Clubhouse to benefit their work, social and fitness lives. There are also many members who use the Club but dont work nearby. In this issue of WAC Magazine we highlight whats available for our members who dont wear suits or ties or dress shoes. Instead, these members find their way to the Club after school, on weekends, or when a parent drops them off at WeeWACs. This is another side of the WAC communitythe family that builds its bonds inside the Club. Swimming lessons, basketball camps, family karate, kids dance class, Junior Fit, golf and tennis lessons, judo (judo!), and of course hot dogs and mac-and-cheese in the Sports Caf! Many of our adult members recall growing up at the WAC themselves and participated in these same activitiesand theyre thrilled to share these experiences with their children. Its heartwarming to see multiple generations feeling connected to our Club, and to meet members who joined for business purposes and were delighted to discover the family benefits as well. Also in this issue, we deliver another update on the Gateway Project. Were getting close to the finish. The ceiling work looks beautiful, and improvements to the ventilation system are complete. New lighting installations, which will further highlight recent improvements, are right behind. Were now anticipatingand getting a look atthe beautiful terrazzo floor. After all the hard work, its nice to get a sense of the full scale of the finished product. Making improvements such as these is critical to the long-term success of the WAC. It honors the history of the Club and prepares it for the next generation of members. Thank you for your patience and enthusiasm.
