Memories: 1958���1959 By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair SwIMMIng TO fAME WAC swimmer nancy ramey���s record-breaking performance in Portland, Ore., was recorded by CBS and sent out as a national news feature. Michelle, ���Canoe Ridge Estate,��� Merlot, Horse Heaven Hills, Washington L u k E R u TA N exeCutIve Chef eRIC fLoyd hA s been busy-busy around the Club���and outside of it. on top of providing strong leadership to the food & beverage department, he recently attended the ���Gifts from the earth��� fundraiser at south seattle Community College. the event raised a record $188,000 to help students in the culinary, wine and hospitality programs with scholarships, equipment and more. this was eric���s sixth year participating in the charity dinner. As usual, he served up some of his best plates. ���this is one of my favorite events,��� he says. ���It gives the WAC a chance to give back to the community.��� eric also recently took part in a local competition through the Club Managers Association of America evergreen Chapter. Sommelier���s Selection ���It was great to compete for the first time, and it was a really good experience,��� he says. BIg ShOwS Summer show-goers enjoyed appearances by the cast of ���Li���l Abner��� and Jerry Lewis. LAnDERS LECTuRE The Friday Morning Lecture Series booked a variety of speakers for the fall season, ranging from local favorites to Ann Landers. BEfORE ThE SEAhAwkS ROwIng TO vICTORY STAg STATE PARTY The two-man WAC rowing team���pair The first fall stag party was planned to honor the 49th and 50th states, both of which joined the union in 1959. MeMbeRs of the WAC tri/Cycle Club ventured to bainbridge Island to conquer the Chilly hilly, a 33-mile bike ride around the island. With february temperatures around 41 degrees and no rain, riders were enthusiastic to kick off the cycling season. After the ride, tri/Cycle members returned to hagerty���s for a hot bowl of chili. LIBRARY hISTORY without cox���of Lt. A. D. Ayrault and Jay Hall won a race just one-eighth of a second short of a national record. 8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | APRIL 2013 DISCOVERY: The vineyard at Canoe ridge estate of Chateau Ste. Michelle is located in the Horse Heaven Hills American Viticultural Area alongside the Columbia river in Southeastern Washington. Chateau Ste. Michelle is located in Woodinville. it is the oldest and most acclaimed winery in Washington state, situated on 105 wooded acres. All Chateau Ste. Michelle red wines are crafted and bottled at the winery at Canoe ridge estate. JuLIE GLAdE The Library Committee considered plans to renovate the 1st Floor space. What little was done left it a fine example of the original 1930 Clubhouse. The San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Cardinals���yes, Chicago���faced off in a professional football game played at Husky Stadium. Former university of Washington star Hugh Mcelhenny led the 49ers. WAC members enjoyed pregame festivities at the Club before busing to the stadium. Chilly hilly starts season David Cook, set to challenge the hills on Bainbridge, with the Tri/Cyle Club. TASTING NOTES: Dark garnet in color with rich and supple structured tannins. An aromatic wine with dark chocolate, peppercorn, black tea, raspberry, and cherry on the nose followed by rich flavors of boysenberry, black currant, and spice. This wine pairs well with Torchy���s prime rib or a WAC signature steak and Madagascar dessert. ���Joannie Fay-Meyer is a longtime member of the WAC, an avid wine enthusiast, and enjoys visiting wine regions around the world.
