Welcome aboard the R/V Thomas G. Thompson, a 274-foot ship owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by the University of Washington Department of Oceanography. In a rare opportunity, go aboard and tour this ship while its moored in Portage Bay at UW. Port Captain Bill Rall and a research vessel technician will be our tour guides as we explore this floating laboratory, which houses up to 36 scientists and 22 crew. Well see everything from research labs to massive deck equipment. This is a fascinating and educational tour with time for questions and answers with officers and scientists. Please be aware the tour includes steep stairs/ladders. Following our tour, lunch is included at the nearby Seattle Yacht Club. Then sit back and get ready to experience the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, and a sore stomach from laughing too hard. Event includes one cocktail, late-night appetizers, and ticket to the improv show. Join us for a tasting tour of Scotland, featuring a signature whisky from five regions. Local connoisseur Glen Reed will talk about the history, distilling, and geographic differences of Scotlands major export as he educates your palate. Youll learn the differences between Scotch from the Lowlands, Highlands and the 34 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | March 2013 Islands. While enjoying tastings paired with food, take in the whimsical kitsch and decor of this intimate pub that pays homage to its homeland. There is a hand-painted map of Scotland on the ceiling. Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, adorns the bar. And the Scottish Wall of Fame displays framed pictures of famous Scots, real and fictional. At the end of the tasting, enjoy another sample of the whisky you liked best. You also can wander up to the small balcony level, where lounge furniture and parlor games invite you to settle in.
