{Buzz} Remembering Phil Smart Sr. March | 2013 Exercise of the Month BarBara Kinney (2) J o n at h a n S c h m i d t The WAC mourns The pAssing of member phil smart sr., who died on february 8 at the age of 93. phil was a regular visitor to the Club and trained in the men���s fitness department until his late 80s. in 2001, he authored Angels Among us, a book about enduring life lessons learned from children. Club programs held a signing event that celebrated the book. A Washington native, phil joined the WAC in 1977 and was the longtime owner of phil smart mercedes-Benz. for nearly five decades, he volunteered weekly at seattle Children���s hospital. he also volunteered with the Boy scouts of America, was a member of rotary Club of seattle, and served under gen. george patton during World War ii. his life was, in a word, remarkable. ���he was a very kind and gentle individual,��� says men���s fitness manager Bill munn. phil lived by a personal rule that divided each day into three eight-hour segments. The first was for sleep, the second for work or school, and the third for helping others. he will be remembered for his leadership, inspiration and warmth���all experienced by WAC members during his frequent time spent at the Club. Back in december, sylvia Krieg participated in her first swim meet with the WAC and brought home red and blue ribbons. during the first meet of 2013, Amelia and ella Carnell, sylvia Krieg, lanie rettig, and Kirsten engber all improved their previous times. sam hines, meanwhile, put forth a great effort in his first-ever swim meet. 6 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MARCH 2013 plank. More than a core exercise, it works backside muscles, challenges multiple muscle groups at once, and helps posterior knee stability. Varying foot positions even slightly can target more or less of your hamstrings or calves. 1. Sit with legs straight out in front of you. Place arms behind you, below shoulders, with palms facing down and fingertips toward your back. 2. Press up using arms and lift hips toward the ceiling. Maintain a straight line from shoulders to heels. Hold position for 30 to 60 seconds and repeat three to four times. AdVANCEd REVERSE PLANk: Incorporate leg lifts. keeping abs engaged and legs straight, pull hips as high as you can into pike position without arching back. Lower hips back to plank position. Repeat as many times as you can while maintaining proper form.
