The comment was prompted by the WAC once again being awarded 5 Star Platinum Club status. One of the five criteria used for this recognition is governance. In our case, governance starts with the WAC Board of Governors, listed to the left of this article. The boards primary responsibilities include: Consideration and passing of all matters of policy affecting the WAC Making, amending and enforcing Club rules Hiring and overseeing the President & CEO Amending and adopting appropriate changes in the Clubs bylaws Providing financial stewardship Delegating to the President & CEO all powers and duties that have not been specifically reserved to officers of the board Making and adopting House Rules Approving appointments to the Program Board Appointing standing and special board committees Maintaining oversight of the WACs conflict of interest policy. During the past several years, our board meetings have become more diverse. We have moved away from simply committee reports and instead have spent more time on specific discussion topics or in general discussion. The first meaningful impact of this shift is reflected by the current lobby remodel. More recently, we have brought forward the concept of a division focus, whereby a specific department within the Club provides the board a detailed description of its area. We also have sought to get the board more hands-on in the area of new member recruitment. The success of our recent Friends & Family promotion can, in a small way, be attributed to a more active board and to committee member participation. When it comes to member participation, the real heavy lifting occurs at the committee level. The WAC has nine standing committees plus one additional committee (Food & Beverage) added this year. Outside of smaller, specialized committees such as the Chairmans, Executive and Audit committees, most consist of 1116 members. This means that committee participation is far broader among the full Club membership than most people realize. The committees allow for diversity in age, gender and interests, and they serve as a breeding ground for future board members. The ability of our membership to have a positive impact on the operations and direction of the Club via the board and committee structure is one of the great virtues of the WACand yet another reason for our continued status as a 5 Star Platinum Club.
