Top Triathlete By Naomi Thalenberg in 2007, carly tu decided to train for her first triathlon to get in shape for her wedding day. since then, carly has placed at the top of her age group in multiple half-ironman races around north america. in 2012, she raced in the ironman World championship 70.3 in las Vegas. she is currently training for ironman lake tahoe to get a slot in the 2014 ironman World championship in kona, Hawaii. Why did you choose triathlons? What i appreciate about triathlons is that everyone has a favorite event where they excel. but everyone also has a weakness. the combination is different for everyone and creates an interesting race dynamic. How has your training progressed? When i first started training for a sprint triathlon, i was able to get in shape within eight weeks. since then, ive joined a bike racing team, began masters swimming at the Wac, and hired a coach. i do strength work, swim, and try to run as much as i can. for cycling, i do one short indoor session during the week and pack two long bike rides into my weekend. Youve been injured a few times. What keeps you motivated? its not about how you fall; its about how you get back up. i carry a card in my wallet that reads, i am an athlete training to qualify for the ironman World championships. act Move eat sleep that. its my daily reminder. What do you recommend for new triathletes? its important to stay focused on attainable goals. be patient enough to accept your current fitness and be proud of your progress along the way. 48 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MARCH 2013 Mondaythursday: 45 pm; through May; $55/month ($35/month for each additional child).
