members in motion Members Artie and Sue Buerk recently donated $5.2 million to the University of Washington Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, now the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship. The center teaches the essentials of entrepreneurship and gives students opportunities to follow their passions. In a phone interview from Southern California, where hes spending the winter, Artie said he made the gift to help kids learn more about business so they can go out and succeed and build the economy of Seattle. The center was founded in 1997 and launched its business plan competition in 1998. The competition already has awarded $1.3 million in seed funding to student-led companies, including NanoString, Contour, Gravity Payments, Cadence Biomedical, Impel NeuroPharma, JoeyBra, PatientStream, and MicroGreen. Connie Bourassa-Shaw, director of the center, called Artie practical but not dogmatic, enthusiastic but perceptive. Artie earned his undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Washington in 1958 and graduated from Harvard Business School in 1963. He joined the WAC in 1981. 20 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MARCH 2013 a fair president CArl r. HogAn was recently elected president of the Washington State Fair. Carl previously served on the boards of Good Samaritan Hospital, the Puyallup Sumner Chamber of Commerce, and Wilcox Family Farms.
