Gateway Update Ta r r y n L a m b e r T ( 2 ) By William Cohen, Vice President Operations The WAC Lobby is undergoing a major renovation. Sections of the original crown molding discovered during demolition are now slated for restoration. Lobby improvements continue Construction surprises offer new opportunities T he remodel of the WAC Lobby continues to reveal some interesting surprises. Keeping up with them has provided some new opportunities. As we touched on last month, during ceiling demolition we discovered more deficiencies than expected in our lobby heating and cooling system. Since then, MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions provided a review and offered suggestions for correcting the systems issues. The proposal includes new and enhanced ductwork as well as an additional service unit. The result will be a more productive and Track The cost-efficient system. projecT Another major opportunity Members will be informed involves the rediscovery of original about project construction crown molding. That segment of the lobby would then stand as a slice of the 12 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | MARCH 2013 Clubhouses 1930 roots, as the drinking fountain, stone walls, crown molding, and elevator doors are all original. The heating and cooling system and the molding restoration have increased the scope of the Gateway Project and require modifications to our ceiling, electrical, lighting, and sprinkler plans. Increased costs are also expected. Both proposals went through committee and board review processes in January. They received endorsement from the House and Finance committees and the final go-ahead from the Board of Governors. By early March, ceiling, electrical, sprinkler and lighting work should be nearing completion. In addition, the new security desk and bell stand will be complete and ready for delivery. Early preparations for the pouring of the new terrazzo floor also should be taking place. Well need to divert members and guests for a few days. During that time, detours for moving through the lobby and accessing elevators will be clearly marked. We expect the project to conclude by early May and look forward to our new WAC Lobby. William Cohen is Vice President Operations. He can be reached at wcohen@wac.net.
