Heart Month Kari rolnicK, Seven SevenTeen PhoTograPhy (2) By Darrick Meneken, Managing Editor The Puget Sound Heart and Stroke Walk will take place this October. Above, participants take part in the 2012 event. From the heart Connecting members to greater wellness—and awareness T he Seattle Great Wheel won't be the only thing going red on February 1. WAC team members will also be showing their support for the 10th annual National Wear Red Day. Buildings and monuments around the country—The Seattle Great Wheel, Macy's downtown, and Union Square included—will turn themselves red in support of the fight against heart disease in women. It's just part of the American Heart Association's annual Heart Month, which happens each February. The WAC is getting in on the action by encouraging team members and members—hey, that's you!—to wear red on February 1. We're also featuring a Wellness article about heart health in this month's magazine (see page 24), supporting the Seattle Go Red for Women Luncheon on May 14, and promoting the AHA Heart and Stroke Walk in Seattle. "Some of us know heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women," Vice President Membership & Marketing Michelle Pinson says. "Our goal is to raise awareness and help WAC members find their own path to good heart health. There's a natural synergy between the WAC and the American Heart Association. We're both working to create better wellness and to improve lives." The WAC Wellness Center offers annual carotid intima-media thickness scans, commonly called CIMT scans, and other services focused on heart health. Contact the Wellness Center at 206.839.4780 or wellness@wac. net for more information and to sign up. Club fitness departments also provide the best equipment and exercise advice for those seeking to improve their cardiovascular condition. "The WAC is all about promoting health," President & CEO Chuck Nelson says. "We do it through fitness, good nutrition, social connections, and social consciousness. Wear Red Day and Heart Month give us a chance to focus some of our energies and to drive awareness." The American Heart Association seeks to improve the country's cardiovascular health—and reduce cardiovascular deaths nationwide—by 20 percent in the next six years.
