Friday: 11–11:45 am H2o cardio Water bug By Naomi Thalenberg dave martin has always had a thing for water. the Washington native swam competitively throughout college. Fifteen years ago, he discovered a love for sailing, too. since then, he has raced 30 to 40 times annually. you can find him face to the wind on lake union, lake Washington or puget sound. We caught up with him after a dip in helene madison pool. How do you juggle swimming and sailing? i use swimming as a means to stay in shape, but i usually compete in at least one event per year. the next competition i'm signed up for is a pacific northwest association of masters swimmers championship meet in april. after swimming for so long, how did you get into racing sailboats? a friend of mine bought a boat and i got an invite to go on it. i really liked it and kept going. i've always had a desire to sail and be on the water. it's fun because the boat isn't the big deal, it's the skills you acquire while racing. What's your favorite thing about sailing? my friend and i call ourselves "garage band" racers. When we go to events like the bacardi cup, we are up against hundreds of guys, many of whom are world champions. they have their boat boys that scrub their boats. We do all the work ourselves. i enjoy that feeling of self-sufficiency. How often do you sail? i go about once a week during the winter. during summer, i can go two to three times a week. i'm currently training for the bacardi cup during miami sailing Week in march. What are your goals? We hope to place high at the star-class world championships in san diego this summer. 48 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | February 2013 An invigorating, refreshing form of exercise that offers resistance and strengthening aimed to improve tone, strength and mobility.
