Reciprocal Clubs By Michelle Van Slack, Director Member Services Staying connected in Chicago Enjoy the grandeur of our reciprocal Clubs in the Windy City D uring a recent visit to Chicago, I visited our five reciprocal clubs in the area. In a city known for its mafia beginnings, historic fire, and sometimes shady politics, residents love their private clubs almost as much as their hotdogsā€” and it shows. They are large, perfectly situated historic buildings with much to offer. Whatever the draw, WAC members frequently visit the reciprocal clubs in Chicago year after year. If you haven't had a chance to go, or just want to learn more about the luxury at your fingertips, join me as I take you on a tour of these magnificent clubs. UniVeRSity ClUB 160 East Pearson Street 312.726.2840 ucco.com Just off Michigan Avenue between Millennium Park and The Art Institute of Chicago sits the architecturally stunning University Club. Established in 1887 with a focus of fostering arts and literature, the University Club offers full-spectrum athletic facilities, a pool, and a state-of-the-art indoor golf center. The 60 guest rooms have a fresh new look, having recently been renovated. When I visited, secret service agents were busy securing the University Club's grandest space, Cathedral Hall, for the arrival of Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who was giving a speech later that evening. Cathedral Hall is the type of space that makes you yearn to throw a grand event. Nearly three stories high, with hand-carved mahogany ceilings and floor-to-ceiling NeoGothic stained glass windows, this room is a masterpiece of opulence. Each of the massive stained glass windows depicts the academic fields of endeavor: law, science, literature, commerce and music. Within the windows are also the 65 symbols of various notable colleges. The University Club prides itself on its collegiate affiliations and has a requirement that members have a college or university degree prior to being granted membership. The hotel is located on floors 15 through 30 of Water Tower Place, which offers spectacular views of the city, the Miracle Mile, and the sapphire blue waters of Lake Michigan. Even if you don't choose to stay in one of the 434 stunning guest rooms, including 90 suites, your letter of introduction will grant you access to the members only club, which offers event space, special access to hotel reservations (sometimes even when the hotel is sold out), and state-of-the-art fitness facilities. 14 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | FeBRUaRy 2013 Cathedral Hall inside the University Club.
