WELLNESS Programs 4th Floor Wellness Center • 206.839.4780 • www.wac.net/wellness-center information and registration: 206.839.4782, shopkins@wac.net Biofeedback Biofeedback teaches us how to regulate our nervous system's activity and other physiological processes. It is an effective tool in alleviating the symptoms commonly caused by or influenced by stress. Biofeedback is used for tension headaches, high blood pressure, sleep disturbance, digestion issues, TMJ and all manner of conditions created or made worse by anxiety. During a biofeedback session, sensitive biomedical equipment measures internal body functions (heart rhythms, breath patterns, sweat gland activity, skin temperature and muscle tension). The unique physical changes measured during stress are then used as the roadmap for the training to promote relaxation. Through biofeedback training we can learn to consciously manage the processes that influence stress and relaxation, and to establish long-term self-regulation—a useful tool to build and protect our health in today's "fight or flight" society. A Metabolic Exercise Test (MET) measures your body's specific physiological response to exercise. While you work out on your preferred cardio equipment, we'll monitor your oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production and heart rate. The data will show how your body uses different fuels at various workloads. You'll also learn the heart rate at which your body burns the most fat and the rate at which your body burns the most calories. Use the information to monitor your heart rate and to burn maximum fat and calories. Combine your MET with an eight-week zone training program to change your physiology, help your body become a better fat-burning machine and increase your overall physical fitness. Undergo a Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Assessment as well to determine the number of calories per day your body needs to maintain its current self. By measuring oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production, this test determines the percentage of calories you burn as fat versus carbohydrates. When you know your RMR, you can set your daily caloric input (diet) and output (exercise) to the exact caloric number that will allow you to either lose or maintain weight. MET or RMR: $175, MET and RMR: $325, MET, RMR and heart-rate monitor: $490, retest only: $140; by appointment only; one full business day cancellation required to avoid charge Naturopathic Medicine Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are licensed physicians who treat acute and chronic illnesses with the goal of achieving optimum health. It also relieves stress and improves performance in professional and daily activities. Rolfing practitioner Sara Bayer uses mild, direct pressure to release holdings of fascia—the body's internal system of flexible support that surrounds every muscle fiber, encases all joints and has a role in the nervous system. The slow, deep strokes stimulate sensory neurons of the muscle nerve, triggering the nervous system to reduce tension. Thus, the body finds health through the re-establishment of balance. Studies show that Rolfing engenders more efficient use of the muscles, allows the body to conserve energy and creates morerefined patterns of movement. Rolfing significantly improves alignment and enhances neurological function.
