APRIL | 2012 Sommelier's Selection By John Myer Betz Family Winery 2003 Syrah La Côte Rousse Tasting notes: A deep, dark, garnet wine that opens with aromas of blackberry, Bing cherry and roasted game. Typical for the Red Mountain American Viticultural Area, the tannin levels are high but smooth and support this well-structured wine. On the palate, the tannins blend harmoniously with fleshy, mouth- coating flavors of black currant, black pepper, and hints of earth and leather. Enjoy this wine with steak, lamb or roasted duck. Discovery: Winemaker Bob Betz is one of two Masters of Wine in Washington state. Before forming his own winery, Betz worked as a winemaker for 28 years at Chateau Ste. Michelle. In earlier vintages, Betz sourced the grapes for La Côte Rousse from Scott Williams of Kiona Vineyards. Starting in 2003, he began blending these with Syrah grown by Jim Holmes of Ciel du Cheval Vineyard. The 2003 vintage is 60 percent Kiona and 40 percent Ciel du Cheval. —John Myer is a Level 1 Sommelier and a member of the Wine Committee. 2012 PHOTO: MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND INDUSTRY
