JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2016 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | 67 L U K E R U TA N January Social The Tri/Cycle season officially begins with the club's first social, set for 6 pm on Friday, January 8, in Hagerty's. The group is open to swimmers, bikers, runners and triathletes of all levels. The first social of the year is a great opportunity to meet club members and find out more about the group. All WAC members are invited. Tri/Cycle socials often feature a guest speaker on topics of interest to endurance athletes and racers. Other club socials in the first half of 2016 are set for Thursday, March 24, and Thursday, May 26. Chilly Hilly Tri/Cycle members will connect for this annual ride on Bainbridge Island, named one of the best rides in the U.S. by Bicycling magazine. The 33-mile route around the island offers great scenery and the perfect way to kick-start your biking season. The event takes place on Sunday, February 28. As event organizers say: "It's guaranteed to be hilly, probably chilly, and always a heck of a lot of fun." For more information on the ride, visit cascade.org/rides- major-rides/chilly-hilly. Group workouts Swim workouts take place at the WAC pool. Meet in the pool at 6 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesday night track workouts at Roosevelt High School begin January 12 at 6 pm. Open-water workouts start in late May. Group bike rides also take place each summer along with practice triathlons. Coaches Julie Vieselmeyer and Wade Praeger work with the team. The highlight of the season for the Tri/Cycle Club is the Seafair Triathlon, this year set for Sunday, July 24. Make 2016 your triathlon year Tri/Cycle Events The USAT regional seminar takes place at the WAC on Saturday, January 9. Featured speakers include reigning Ironman North America champion Matt Hanson and two-time Triathlete Magazine Offroad Triathlete of the Year Melanie McQuaid. The seminar, set for 8:30 am–4:30 pm, will include industry- leading experts on a wide range of topics, including open-water swimming, bike fit, injury prevention, nutrition, and technology in training. WAC Tri/Cycle Coach Julie Vieselmeyer will speak on mental conditioning. Seminar space is limited, and discounts are available for USA Triathlon annual members. Tri/Cycle leaders note that the group is for any WAC member with an interest in improving their running, cycling or swimming. Joining the club is also a great way to find workout partners. Triathlon competition is optional. Membership costs $50 per year and includes a signature Tri/Cycle Club item and special discounts at local retailers.
