B oxing has been steadily gaining popularity as big names like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao draw attention to the ring. Even Victoria's Secret runway models point to boxing as the real secret to their defined arms and six-pack abs. Now the WAC is jumping on the boxing bandwagon. New fitness classes featuring full boxing workouts have been drawing in a diverse group of members. By combining strength and cardio workouts, boxing packs a one-two punch of fitness for your entire body. Be prepared for a cardiovascular and core-centric workout that especially targets the upper body and burns massive calories. Estimates show it's possible to burn 200–400 calories in one 30-minute boxing workout. The high-intensity interval training provides the aerobic and anaerobic workouts needed to build strength, power and speed. Boxing benefits everyone, regardless of age. Here are a few of its advantages. COORDINATION AND BODY BALANCE Trying to hit a target with your fist increases hand-eye coordination and focus. Boxing can also improve your balance, reaction and posture by requiring you to change your stance often. BODY COMPOSITION Being more active increases muscle mass and reduces fat. Boxing's combination of strength training and cardio intervals means your body will never be bored. MENTAL AWARENESS The ability to concentrate enhances your positive moods. Boxing training instills self-confidence, motivation, and self-discipline by requiring you to actively focus on the workout at hand. LESS STRESS Boxing provides a controlled outlet to release anger and aggression in a safe environment. It also teaches the body mechanics of self-defense. Through repetition and practice, we become better at remaining poised under pressure. The advantages of boxing conditioning can be yours without ever hitting another person—or being hit. All you have to do is be willing to try something new. As the greatest boxer ever once said: "Don't count the days, make the days count."
