The rush of the holidays is behind us, the days are slowly becoming longer, and my mind naturally goes to aspirations for the months and years ahead. Launching headfirst into 2016, I've spent some time thinking about the future of the Washington Athletic Club. My greatest goal for the WAC is that we be relevant—to our loyal members, to potential members, and to the Seattle community. WAC leadership has been talking about relevance for the past few years, and I selected it as the theme for my term as Chairman. In the years following the Great Recession, we worked hard on all fronts to make certain our business will continue to be sustainable through the ups and downs of economic shifts, globally and locally. It goes without saying that to sustain over the long term, we need to have a solid game plan. You'll be glad to know that each department in the Club has a five-year strategy for member service and facility enhancement that incorporates relevant emerging trends—fitness, entertainment, dining, etc. Efficient operation, cost management, and engaged membership are key pillars of these strategies. Threaded together, these departmental blueprints make up the Club's multiyear plan, and this serves as the basis for budgeting, capital allocation, and membership outreach. Last month I had the opportunity to sit down with President & CEO Chuck Nelson and his team of vice presidents to review their updated strategies. This January and February we'll discuss these draft documents in committee and board meetings, surfacing feedback to sharpen the plans and keep the Club on a sustainable trajectory. This is an important part of the annual business cycle at the WAC, and we take it seriously. In my letter last August, I asked you to identify the role you will play in securing the future of the WAC. As you chart your course for 2016, work the Club into your plans. Your engagement helps drive the WAC's relevance. Refer a new member, join us for a Club event, try a new fitness class, or volunteer to be a member leader. Your options to contribute to our collective success are endless. Fondly, Charting a course for our future
