8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015 Memories: 1980 By Dee Sanwick, WAC Historian POSITIVELY PERU Club members and guests toured the Peruvian Gold Exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum in April after a cocktail hour. The visit included an informative film and a very short chartered bus ride to the museum. HIDDEN GEMS Mary McMahon, a talented and prominent WAC member, hosted a two-meeting workshop to give artists a chance to complete any unfinished masterpieces they might have tucked away. PANNING FOR GOLD Members took a raft trip down the Sauk River and were taught how to pan for gold. Round-trip transportation, lunch, coffee, wine, and a gold pan were supplied. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra presented "Sentimental Swing— 1940" at an evening of dinner and dancing as a part of the WAC's 50th anniversary. Women were presented with gardenia corsages and dance cards, bringing to mind the college proms of a bygone era. WONDERFUL WATERCOLORS The central Oregon resort Kah-Nee-Ta was the destination for Club members and their guests along with members of the American Watercolor Society. Supervised painting and class critiques were scheduled for the mornings, leaving the rest of the day open for painters to enjoy the resort. { BUZZ } S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R | 2 0 1 5 CALLING ALL WAC KIDS. Now there's another great way to park at the WAC. The "Validated" mobile app (formerly known as PARKT, parkt.com) allows participating stores and restaurants in downtown to reimburse you for part or all of your parking fee through the app. Torchy's and Hagerty's, meanwhile, will validate when you spend $50 or more after 5 pm, and the Spa at the WAC validates for many services. For details, call the WAC Garage at 206.464.3059. PARK IT! U S I N G Y O U R C L U B J O H N B A N G By Peter Christian Dussek Family Cellars 2012 Syrah Rattlesnake Hills Columbia Valley, Washington Tasting Notes: This wine has a silky and rich texture with flavors of ripe cherry. As tends to be the character of Syrah, this wine is fruit-driven with dark tobacco and espresso accents at the finish. This Syrah has been rated as high as 90 points. Discovery: Dussek Family Cellars is one of four labels owned by Woodhouse Wine Estates in Woodinville. The people behind the wine are the husband-and-wife team of Bijal and Sinead Shah. The two started Woodhouse Wine Estates with Bijal's uncle, Tom Campbell, in 2004. Woodhouse Wine Estates is known for crafting terroir-driven wines with deep, multi-layered fruit notes. Like many of the most respected wineries in Europe, they release wines a bit later than most so they have time to rest, integrate, and better express their flavor complexities. This wine would pair well with the grilled portobello sliders on our new small plates menu in Torchy's. —Peter Christian is WAC Vice President Food & Beverage and a Level 1 Sommelier. This wine is available by the glass in Torchy's.
