JOHN & THERESE PLATT John's father was a lieutenant commander in the Navy. He flew in the right seat of an A-6 and was on the USS Yorktown. He died in an air training accident when John was 8. Therese's dad was enlisted in the Army ... at 17! Therese's uncle, Jerry Currid, fought in the South Pacific as a U.S. Marine. Foxholes, shelling, bayonets … and in civilian life he was a great guy to be around. John's stepdad served in the Army. MARK HILL My wife's brother graduated from West Point and served in Europe and Iraq. I have no connection with the military, but I was working on Wall Street on the morning of the September 11 attacks. Taking a young sailor to dinner is the least we can do to show our appreciation to all who serve our country. BRAD THORESON My son-in-law, David Morrison, who's married to my daughter Nicole, is a lieutenant who is in flight training in the Navy for the B-1 bomber. PAUL & LINDA LOWBER Paul's dad served in the Navy during the Korean War as a machine gun operator on bombers. Paul's mom was a technical sergeant in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. His brother volunteered for and served in the Army infantry in Vietnam, was critically injured, and rehabbed at Madigan Army Medical Center outside Tacoma. Linda's father served in the Air Force and worked as a civilian at Joint Base Lewis- McChord until retirement. TAMMY YOUNG My father served for the Navy in World War II. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor for some time shortly before the attack. He was aboard the USS Brooklyn for 4.5 years. He was 18 when he enlisted. My mother's father served in the Army Signal Corps in France during WWI. My mother's grandfather served in the Civil War. He was born in Vermont but trained at Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin. That site went on to hold a special place in our family as it is now home to the football field for the Wisconsin Badgers. My mother, my father, and I all graduated on the Camp Randall field. S eafair Fleet Week is a special time in Seattle, and for the second consecutive year the WAC hosted visiting Navy men and women at a reception in the WAC Clubhouse. Afterward, WAC members treated sailors to dinner and sightseeing around Seattle—from backyard barbecues to dinner downtown, and from trips up the Space Needle to rides on The Great Wheel. This year, the WAC hosted 40 sailors from the USS Boxer, USS Gridley, and USS Dewey. The evening started in the Johnson Lobby Lounge with light appetizers and beverages. Many of the WAC members who participated shared a deep connection with the men and women in uniform. We asked some of them to tell their stories here.
