8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2014 Memories: 1972 Remembering Luther "Hit and Run" Carr Melting off the pounds By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair WOMEN'S EQUALITY The Honorable Thyra Thomson, Secretary of State of Wyoming, came to speak at a February 14 lecture on women's liberation and gender equality. MOMS AND BASKETBALL The Mother Son Banquet on March 7 had a "Sons and Sonics Night" theme. They had dinner at the Club and then went to the Seattle Center Coliseum (now KeyArena) to watch the Seattle SuperSonics play the Baltimore Bullets (today's Washington Wizards). CELEBRITY LECTURE Actor Sebastian Cabot gave a lecture to Club women on March 8 on "Liberty, Love, and Learning." Cabot was a co-star on the sitcom Family Affair that ran from 1966–1971. HANDBALL UPSET The WAC hosted the national handball championships from April 15–22, which involved a major upset. Fred Lewis of Miami Beach defeated top-seeded Paul Haber and went on to win the open singles championship. EXCITING NEW DANCE The WAC offered an eight-week lesson on Middle Eastern dancing, described as a first for the Athletic Department. The women were asked to wear leotards and high heels. { BUZZ } S E P T E M B E R | 2 0 1 4 BELOVED LONG-TIME WAC member Luther Carr passed away July 1 at age 77. Luther "Hit and Run" Carr first gained notoriety as a four-sport star athlete at Lincoln High School in Tacoma. He went on to be running back for the University of Washington football team in the 1950s. His professional career with the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders was cut short in 1960 because of an injury, but that didn't stop Luther from flourishing off the field. Luther was a local business owner and active community volunteer. He was also a strong family man and a proud WAC member. In fact, he was in the "Apple Cup Alumni" feature story in the November/ December 2012 issue of this magazine. AFTER A GRUELING 13 weeks of hard work, Sallye Soltner came out on top of the WAC's Meltdown Challenge, the Club's spin on the popular weight-loss show e Biggest Loser. e participants were able to track their progress throughout the challenge with weekly weigh-ins and use the Club's personal training and nutritional resources to help along the way. With diet help from WAC Nutritionist Shana Hopkins and plenty of exercise, Sallye lost a remarkable 11.3 percent of her body weight, narrowly beating out runners-up Doug Clark and Andrew Minear. is is especially impressive given that she was one of the older competitors. Sallye was able to defeat younger members and lose nearly 30 pounds. Such a feat, says Personal Training Coordinator Taylor Clark, "takes serious dedication and self-discipline." By Sara A. Williams 2006 Betz Family Winery La Serenne Columbia Valley, Washington Tasting notes: At first pour, La Serenne is dark garnet in the glass; once swirled, it is enhanced with rich blackberry color on the rim. Made from 100 percent Syrah, the wine's black cherry and anise aromas waft up to entice your nose and are then followed by notes of smoky cedar. Lush and earthy on the palate and dominated by black pepper and licorice with hints of tobacco, La Serenne has a plush and supple finish. This wine would be perfectly paired with our grilled herb Martinez Ranch lamb chops and a light salad. Discovery: La Serenne comes from the Boushey Vineyard in Yakima Valley and is the only wine from Betz Family Winery that does not incorporate several vineyards. The cooler climate and thin soil of the mid-valley lend to smaller clusters on the vine, which result in riper fruit and terroir driven wines. —Sara A.
