A N N A D E L A P A Z EXERCISE OF THE MONTH GARRETT MADISON has had quite a run since being featured in the May 2014 edition of WAC Magazine (see his Meet the Athlete profile at wacmagazine. com/i/303138/48). As the world learned in late April, this year's climbing season on Mount Everest ended with the death of 16 porters, three of them from Garrett's team. It was the deadliest single day in Everest history. "Biggest mountaineering tragedy ever," Garrett said after his return to the WAC this past June. For him, the event ended by chipping the body of his lead porter from the Khumbu Icefall, located just above base camp. An ice avalanche the previous day, on April 18, swept down the notorious killing field. •e incident stopped all 2014 summit attempts from the Nepali side of the mountain, the prime route up the world's highest peak. Back on top? A U G U S T | 2 0 1 4 Court back in session WITH THE BEST INTRACLUB hoops action in the city, the WAC men's basketball league tips off again this winter. More than 300 players compete in five divisions, and adult members of all skill levels are encouraged to sign up. Games take place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights during winter in the 8th Floor gym. Registration is open through Friday, September 5. To sign up, contact Athletic Programs Manager Darin Barr at 206.464.3074 or dbarr@ wac.net. Cost is $125 per member, and you must be at least 21 years old. Teams are determined by draft. Garrett's climbing season, however, was just beginning. He returned to Seattle and resumed leading trips up Mount Rainier—extra work he'd picked up following the Liberty Ridge tragedy that killed six climbers, including two guides, on Rainier in late May. With the death toll already high this climbing season, Garrett left for the world's most dangerous mountain in late June. For every four climbers that attempt K2, one doesn't make it down. •e world's second-highest peak straddles Pakistan and China. Depending on the weather, Garrett's summit attempt was to take place in late July or early August. "We've always talked about K2 as a possibility," he said. "It's highly coveted among people who are serious climbers. Much harder than Everest. For me it's something I've always wanted to do."
