Shine on! It is not a well-known fact, but hair—just like skin—is susceptible to sun damage. Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB rays will damage the hair cuticle structure, making hair dry, brittle, and at risk for split ends. Chemically treated hair is particularly vulnerable. There are precautionary steps we can take to minimize these effects. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using physical and chemical barriers, such as wide-brim hats and conditioners that contain sunscreen, to block the sun's damaging rays. In addition, one should avoid using hair products that contain alcohol, trim split ends, and get a deep conditioning hair treatment.
