8 | Washington Athletic Club Magazine | AUGUST 2014 Memories: 1971 Showdown in Snoqualmie Taking residence as leaders By Dee Sanwick, History Committee Chair PARTY TIME Members were invited to attend a New Year's party, one of the biggest traditions since the Club's inception. The party included dancing, live music, and a three-course dinner. SWING AWAY The WAC's junior handball team was a popular activity for boys ages 12–18 who wanted to improve their skills and tactics on the court. INTRODUCING PICKLEBALL First played in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, pickleball was becoming a popular sport for Club members trying to stay in shape for tennis during the cold winter months. QUIET LEISURE The Club created a new area on the 10th Floor exclusive for downtown businesspeople who wished to have a quiet moment. The quiet room featured eight reclining chairs and dimmable overhead lighting. NEW SPORTS OFFERINGS The Club's athletic department started new classes, including swimming, boys boxing, men's volleyball, gymnastics, and handball. { BUZZ } A U G U S T | 2 0 1 4 L U K E R U TA N AS SUMMER COMES TO A CLOSE, THERE IS NO BETTER way for golf fans to spend a weekend than at the Boeing Classic. Held August 18–24 at the beautiful TPC Snoqualmie Ridge, with the main tournament running August 22–24, the Boeing Classic hosts some of the finest golfers on the Champions Tour. WAC members can experience the scenic course and exciting competition free of charge with their membership card. Some WAC members also seek to get closer to the action by volunteering with the tournament, which will be celebrating its 10th anniver- sary this year. For more information, visit boeingclassic.com. THOSE WHO PLAY TOGETHER STAY TOGETHER. WAC members and friends Jennie Wild and Carolyn Schook, players on a WAC basketball team, have been named co-chief residents at Seattle Children's Hospital. In this role—which they share with colleague Sarah Dixon—they help manage the pediatric residency program. •ey met three years ago as first-year residents at Children's. Jennie had recently joined the WAC to play on the women's basketball league. When she learned of their shared love of basketball, she invited Carolyn to join, too. "It has been great to be part of a community of incredible women in an atmosphere of healthy competition," says Jennie. Playing basketball also served as an outlet for the stresses of residency. Now that they're leaving behind the rigors of on-the-job training, they look forward to more time on the court. By Peter Christian 1998 Woodward Canyon Artist Series (No. 7), Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting Notes: It's a classic question for great red wine: Drink or hold? This Cabernet is integrated with spicy new oak, generous black fruits, great texture, and a deep purple color. The wine is beautifully proportioned with a long finish of cassis, chocolate, and toasted oak. This Cabernet has benefited significantly from bottle age and is at its peak right now. Drink it! Discovery: Not only does Rick Small exert his winemaking genius on the classic Woodward Canyon wines each and every year, but he also tells us how best to enjoy them. Rick has painstakingly put a vintage chart into his winery's website (woodwardcanyon.com/drink-hold) to help you maximize your enjoyment of his wines. Cabernet Sauvignon is given a great deal of attention as a premier varietal worth cellaring. Artist Series wines typically benefit from 10 years of aging and show best with food. —Peter Christian is WAC Vice President Food & Beverage and a Level 1 Sommelier. Sommelier's Selection
